What Makes AYSF Christ-Centered Care Uniquely Effective?

AT AYSF, we offer a non-clinical alternative to therapy for women who are tired of ineffective, unbiblical approaches to care. Drawing from the Word of God and guided by the Holy Spirit, we will uncover the narratives that have taken root in your heart that are out of alignment with God’s beautiful truth. We will get to the bottom of how those false narratives were introduced through the things you have experienced, how those narratives have been reinforced since, and how they have been adversely impacting your quality of life to this day. We will help you engage with God in such a way that you can experience his healing balm right where you need it in your heart and life.

With AYSF’s help, you will also learn how to take courageous responsibility for whatever God has actually called you to, and STOP running yourself into the ground trying to control what is not yours to control. We will help you discover the riches that are available to you as one who belongs to Jesus and teach you how to harness the power of the Word and the Spirit so you are able to prevail no matter what you have experienced, or what you encounter in the future.

AYSF is for women who are ready to do battle

with WHATEVER is holding them back.

Let’s Do This!

Let’s Address Your Questions:

We will begin by meeting once a week. Once notable progress has been made on the issues that led you to seek support, we will reduce the cadence of our meeting to biweekly. Once you are able to say “I am flourishing,” we reduce our cadence to once a month.

When you’re ready, we can meet on an “as needed” basis. Essentially, this means the door is always open. You can simply reach out if there is a new challenge you are facing, a decision you would like to talk through, etc. At this point, you are welcome to schedule à la carte sessions without needing to commit to a long-term process again. Having this kind of “lifetime” access to support is one of the many distinctives that makes AYSF truly special.

AYSF Christ-Centered Care Sessions are currently available for women only. However, we warmly welcome men in our Training in Christ-Centered Care and teenage girls in our AYSF Teaching!

In addition to our one-on-one care sessions,

we offer relationship sessions for:

  • mothers and adult daughters
  • sisters or other female family members
  • female friends or business partners

Great question! Christians who make a point to pursue Christian counseling are quite often surprised to discover little or nothing distinctly Christian about their counseling experience. That is because while the counselor or therapist identifies as a Christian, what they have trained in and are practicing is secular psychology. They may have little or no theological training. They may or may not reference Scripture or even reference God at all.

What Christians who want their faith to be central to their counseling experience are actually seeking is “biblical counseling.”  Biblical counseling is a decidedly different modality of care. Unfortunately, many Christians are unfamiliar with the term, or if we have heard it, we imagine it is synonymous with “Christian counseling.”  To learn more about biblical counseling, click here.

AYSF Founder, Susan Kusmin, is seminary-trained in biblical counseling and has served on staff as a biblical counselor with such reputable organizations as Redeemer Counseling Services (RCS) and The Salvation Army’s Adult Rehabilitation Center, both in NYC.

While the care we offer at AYSF has its roots in biblical counseling, there are enough distinctives about our approach that we refer to our work as Christ-Centered Care.

Why pay “out of pocket” for AYSF Christ-Centered Care Sessions?

(even if your medical insurance covers some kind of “therapy”)

Let’s be frank: counselors and therapists of all kinds abound, but truly effective care -that can help get you flourishing across the board in your life- is extremely rare. Sadly, many people report having had a disappointing therapy experience that just didn’t make much difference, or worse, caused more pain or confusion. When we look to God’s Word, we see that we need not be surprised.

Consider the following:

How much better to get wisdom than gold!
To get understanding is to be chosen rather than silver.

Prov 16:16

Where can wisdom be found?… No mortal comprehends its worth… Neither gold nor crystal can compare with it, nor can it be had for jewels of gold. Coral and jasper are not worthy of mention; the price of wisdom is beyond rubies… God understands the way to it, and he knows its place.

Job 28:12-28

First, we see that God says wisdom is extremely valuable: more so than gold and jewels! Why? Because wisdom is what enables a person to navigate every challenge of this life in ways that promote flourishing for ourselves and for others. (Click here to learn more about wisdom and the other essentials of flourishing that we help you cultivate at AYSF.)

Now, a key dimension of what makes anything valuable is its rarity. We’re talking basic economics: the higher the quality of a thing, the harder it is to come by, so the more valuable we consider it. By saying wisdom is extremely valuable, God is indicating that the real thing is not common. So in an ocean of options, it is not surprising that truly “wise counsel” is hard to find. This Scripture also reveals that true wisdom is from God. This means that theories and coping strategies that are not anchored in God’s Word and do not involve engaging with God in faith and dependency, are fool’s gold that will tarnish in your hands.

So, bottom line:

AYSF Christ-Centered Care Sessions are WORTH the Investment.

Now you have the opportunity to join the many AYSF clients who joyfully attest that the investment they have made in their comprehensive flourishing has been worth every penny.  (Though not to worry: AYSF sessions will not actually cost you gold and rubies.)

Whether you are ready to start or have more questions:

We would love to talk with you.

Problem 1: One-Size-Fits-All Approach to Learning

We may listen to lots of sermons and Christian podcasts, attend a bible study, read Christian books and blogs and more, and still…not much changes in our lives. The thing is: these messages are designed for the masses. To cast a wide net, we speak in broad-strokes: lots of theory, lots of “should’s,” but little or no support in applying the truths we hear about to the details of our unique lives. There’s no guidance in our particular challenges, and no ongoing follow up to ensure we persevere on a new path. The one-size-fits-all approach isn’t working…

Problem 2: Un-biblical Counseling
See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ.

Colossians 2:8

In our desperation, many Christians are turning to “the world” for solutions: self-help and secular therapy (whether practiced by unbelievers or by Christians). But this leads to greater confusion and distress as it reinforces self-reliance, misunderstandings about our identity, the use of coping strategies that do more harm than good, and the pursuit of our own misguided agendas, none of which can lead to flourishing…

Problem 3: “Counsel”- less Counseling

Many of us have tried counseling only to be left frustrated that we did most of the talking, regurgitating what we already knew about ourselves, while someone simply listened, nodded empathetically, and asked an occasional question. Should you dare to ask for input, you are likely met with an evasive “Well, what do you think?” But the emotional relief of  just “venting” is momentary. What have you received that will actually change the way you live? Without insightful, actionable feedback, you go home to all your same problems…

Problem 4: Our Blindspots are Killing Us

We all bring into counseling the concerns that feel most pressing to us. But it is often what we can’t see in ourselves, what we are minimizing or hiding from ourselves or others, that is doing the most damage in our lives. In typical counseling, a counselor only addresses topics the counselee initiates. As a result, it is not uncommon for a person to be in counseling for years, addressing one or two issues, while they are knowingly or unknowingly self-destructing in other areas of their life. The result: our blind spots are killing us…

Problem 5: Lots of talk + not much action = not much change
Faith apart from works is useless.

James 2:20

Too often we talk about our problems in ways that lead nowhere. We experience a fleeting sense of relief from getting things off our chest, yet we continue to engage in the same patterns of behavior that cause us distress. We commiserate with fellow strugglers and settle for feeling “validated” in our feelings without being challenged and supported in consistently making better choices so that we can experience better results…

AYSF Counseling FAQ

We will begin by meeting once a week. Once notable progress has been made on the issues that led you to pursue counseling, we will reduce the cadence of our meeting to biweekly. Once you are able to say “I am flourishing!“ we reduce our cadence to once a month. At this point, you are on a “wellness“ track and these monthly check-ins ensure that you are continuing to maintain and further the progress you’ve made. When you’re ready, we can then meet on an “as needed” basis. What this means is that the door is always open. You can simply reach out if there is a new challenge you are facing, a decision you would like to talk through, etc. At this stage, you are welcome to schedule à la carte sessions without needing to commit to a long-term process again. Having this kind of “lifetime” access to support is virtually unheard of in the counseling world and is one of the many distinctives that makes AYSF Counseling unique and effective.
